Pregnancy has a funny way of making time feel slow and fast at the same time.

You spend months waiting to meet your baby, watching your bump grow, choosing tiny clothes and imagining what life will be like after the birth. Then suddenly, your baby is here — and those first few weeks seem to disappear overnight.

That is why we love bump to baby photography.

Instead of documenting just one stage, a bump-to-baby experience gives you photographs from two completely different moments: the anticipation of pregnancy and the first precious days with your newborn.

At Fably Photography in Parramatta, Sydney, we create maternity and newborn sessions with this journey in mind. Our goal is not simply to give you beautiful photographs. We want the experience to feel relaxed, personal and enjoyable for your whole family.

What is bump to baby photography?

Bump to baby photography is a combination of maternity and newborn photography sessions.

The maternity session captures you while you are still waiting to meet your baby. The newborn session then tells the next part of the story — your baby in those tiny first days.

For many families, the contrast between the two sessions is what makes the collection so special.

You can see your growing bump, your connection with your partner and the excitement before the birth, followed by those tiny fingers, sleepy expressions and first family photographs after your baby arrives.

A bump-to-baby experience can include:

  • A maternity photography session
  • A newborn photography session
  • Partner and family photographs
  • Sibling portraits
  • Baby details and individual portraits
  • Printed artwork or an album, depending on your chosen package

At Fably, our Bump to Baby package combines a one-hour maternity studio session with a two-hour newborn session, along with maternity and newborn outfits and a choice of album or canvas wall art.

When should you have your maternity photos taken?

For most mums, around 28–32 weeks is a beautiful time for maternity photography.

Your bump is usually nicely defined, while you may still have enough energy to enjoy the session comfortably. Of course, every pregnancy is different, so there isn’t one perfect week for everyone.

If you are expecting twins or your pregnancy requires additional care, your doctor or midwife may recommend a different timeframe.

At Fably Photography, we can help you plan the session around your due date and the style of photographs you have in mind.

And if you’re considering a bump-to-baby package, it is worth getting in touch during pregnancy rather than waiting until the last few weeks.

What happens during a maternity photography session?

You don’t need to know how to pose.

That’s one of the biggest concerns we hear from people who have never had professional portraits taken before.

During the session, we guide you through the poses, where to stand, how to position your hands and how to interact naturally with your partner or children.

At our Parramatta studio, we also have maternity gowns available, so you don’t necessarily need to purchase a special outfit for the occasion.

Depending on the collection you choose, you can have several outfit options and create different looks during the session.

The aim is to create a mixture of photographs — some elegant portraits of mum, some images with your partner and children, and some quieter moments that feel more personal.

What should you wear for maternity photos?

Your clothing should make you feel comfortable and confident.

If you’re having a studio maternity session, gowns can make the process particularly easy because you don’t have to spend time finding an outfit that photographs well.

At Fably Photography, maternity gowns are available as part of our studio collections.

If you prefer your own clothes, neutral colours, soft fabrics and simple silhouettes generally work beautifully. You don’t have to dress everyone in matching outfits. Coordinating colours often looks much more natural.

Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel like yourself.

When should you book your newborn photography session?

Newborn sessions are generally planned for the first couple of weeks after your baby arrives.

Many parents aim for approximately 5–14 days after birth, particularly if they love those sleepy, curled-up newborn photographs. However, there is no need to panic if your baby is older than that.

Babies do not follow photography schedules.

They may arrive early, feed frequently, sleep differently from what you expected or simply decide that the day of your photoshoot is the perfect day to stay awake.

That’s completely fine.

At Fable, newborn sessions are baby-led, with time for feeding, cuddling and settling when needed. The session isn’t about rushing through a list of poses.

What should you bring to a newborn photography session?

Keep it simple.

You will generally want to bring:

  • Plenty of nappies
  • Wipes
  • Extra clothes for parents and siblings
  • Your baby’s usual feeding supplies
  • A favourite blanket or personal item if you’d like to include it
  • Any special keepsakes you’d like photographed

We provide newborn styling, wraps, props and backgrounds at the studio, so you don’t need to arrive carrying half of the nursery.

And if your baby needs a feed or cuddle during the session, that’s simply part of the experience.

What happens at a newborn photography session?

The first thing we want you to do is relax.

You have probably had very little sleep, and you may still be getting used to life with your new baby. The last thing you need is to feel like you are being timed.

Our newborn sessions are planned around your baby’s rhythm.

We take photographs of your baby individually as well as photographs with parents, siblings and other family members where appropriate.

Some images may be carefully posed, while others are more natural and family-focused.

The tiny details matter too — little hands, feet, eyelashes, expressions and the way your baby fits into your arms.

Those are often the photographs that become even more meaningful as your child gets older.

Should siblings be included?

Absolutely.

If you have an older child, including them in your newborn session gives you photographs of the relationship between your children from the very beginning.

We can create photographs of the siblings together as well as individual portraits and family photographs.

The same applies to grandparents and other important members of the family.

Your newborn photographs don’t have to be only about the baby. They can tell the story of everyone who was waiting to meet them.

Studio or outdoor maternity photography in Sydney?

Both can be beautiful — it really depends on the look you want.

A studio maternity session gives you a controlled environment, access to gowns and a more polished, editorial style.

An outdoor maternity session gives you natural light and the character of Sydney itself. Beaches, parks, gardens and golden-hour locations can create a completely different feeling.

At Fable Photography, we offer both studio and outdoor maternity photography options, depending on the collection and location you choose.

If you aren’t sure which style suits you, we can talk through the options before you book.

What makes a good bump-to-baby collection?

For us, it is the connection between the photographs.

Your maternity photographs show the anticipation.

Your newborn photographs show the reality of finally meeting your baby.

When the two are displayed together in an album or on your walls, they become more than individual portraits. They tell the beginning of your family’s story.

That is also why we recommend thinking about how you want to enjoy your photographs after the session.

Digital files are wonderful for sharing with family, but printed photographs and albums have a different feeling. They become something you can physically hold, display and eventually show your child.

Why choose Fably Photography for your bump-to-baby experience?

Fably Photography is a boutique photography studio in Parramatta, Sydney, specialising in maternity, newborn, baby and family photography.

We have designed our sessions to be comfortable for families rather than making parents feel like they need to arrive perfectly prepared.

For maternity sessions, we can provide gowns and help you create different looks.

For newborn sessions, we provide the styling, backgrounds and baby props, while keeping the session flexible around your baby’s needs.

Most importantly, we understand that these photographs are personal.

Every family is different. Some parents want beautifully styled portraits. Others prefer simple family photographs. Many want a mixture of both.

Our job is to help you create something that feels like your family.

Your bump-to-baby story starts before your baby arrives

There will always be another photograph you can take later.

Your baby will smile again. They will grow bigger. They will eventually stop fitting into those tiny newborn clothes.

But you only get one first pregnancy and one beginning.

Bump-to-baby photography gives you a way to preserve both sides of that story — the person you were while waiting for your baby and the family you became when they arrived.

If you’re expecting a baby in Sydney and would like to discuss maternity and newborn photography, Fably Photography offers bump-to-baby sessions from our Parramatta studio.

We’d love to help you plan yours.
